Working in healthcare is stressful on the best of days, but in the time of a pandemic it's all too easy to feel disconnected and dissatisfied with our jobs. In this humorous and interactive presentation, participants will learn about the differences between happiness and joy at work and five strategies to help nurses remember that their work is not about medications administered or time cards processed, but rather the meaning we feel from the gift of service.
Objectives:
- Define the concept of joy in the workplace.
- Describe five ideas for finding joy in the workplace.
- Assess own personal value system for life and work.
Greg Durkin has been in the field of professional development since 1990, working in tertiary care, academic, and community health settings. Greg is on the editorial board for the Journal for Nurses in Professional Develpment (JNPD) and has published articles on development of web-based courses, orientation evaluation, and competencies. An accomplished speaker, Greg has presented at countless regional and local associations and organizations on diverse topics such as needs assessment, cultural awareness, having a questioning attitude, competency, professional joy, and teamwork. Greg was the recipient of the 2011 ANPD Excellence in Professional Development Educator/Facilitator Practice Award, is a co-author to the Certification Preparation Study Guide, and was the section editor for the 5th edition of ANPD's Core Curriculum for Nursing Professional Development.
